Student Art Walk (Nov. 6th -Nov. 12th)

Student Art Walk
Sunday, November 6, 2011 –Saturday, November 12, 2011
Shops around Avenue L

Take a stroll Downtown Huntsville sometime this week. You will find an artistic treat!

This first ever Student Art Walk will consist of art from the following SHSU students: Daniel Bertalot, Summer Brewster, Nic Cambell, Catherine Cartwright, Meredith Cawley, Jay Cronin, Beth Hargrove, Katy Kana, Stephen Lee, Virginia Purswell, Julia Six, Jared Taylor and Josh Yates.

The artwork is on display inside and outside of Avenue L and in front of other stores on Sam Houston Avenue. On display are paintings, ceramics, a mural, and a minimalist performance art piece by Josh Yates. Josh Yates will be living in a store front without *gasp* a cell phone for the entire week. The only time he will be leaving the storefront will be when he goes to class. I hope he uses that time to take a bathroom break and get a bite to eat.

Avenue L will also host a reception on Friday starting at 7:00pm. You will be able to meet the artists involved in this event.

AFTERMATH: Brush Muscle with Andy Don Emmons and Micheal Wynne

Last Thursday, I had the pleasure of viewing the Brush Muscle Art Show, which included original works by Andy Don Emmons and Micheal Wynne. They collaborated on each piece, and here are some pictures of my favorites:

Like most art, I probably don't entirely get what is going on here, but whatever it is, I LIKE it:

You better watch out for THIS painting:

More pictures can be found HERE on our Facebook page. If you haven't already "liked" it, you should. :)

This man was seriously thinking about having some of the yummy homemade pozole that was right next to him. The pozole was made by Sandy Bates Emmons, who unfortunately could not be there that night because she was taking care of a very pregnant miniature donkey. I am hoping that the donkey and babies are doing okay:

The Crazywood Dance Studio is also good for SKATEBOARDING!
(Myron showing off his smooth skateboarding moves)

Artist Andy Don Emmons is also known for his Cuzzin Longhair's Psychedelic Armadillo Show on 93.5 The Outlaw. Many of his fellow coworkers came out to support his art show. You may not recognize them by their faces, but their voices should be familiar from listening to that very awesome radio station:

("The Weather Goddess, Crystal Clear, and her Adonis"- Quote borrowed from Sandy Bates Emmons)

(Dave "The Troll Hunter" LeLeux)

Overall, I am very impressed with the art work in the Brush Muscle Art Show. I am also very impressed with the Crazywood Art Gallery. It does not feel like Huntsville when you step inside. I am looking forward to going back and getting to know more of the local artists and seeing more of their art work.

For instance, I am looking forward to seeing the artwork of THIS young local artist, Ilyana Mansfield.

Her deviant art page is right here:

Thanks for the excellent art show, Andy Don Emmons and Micheal Wynne! I hope to see more of your artwork in the near future.

Spotlight: FN Classy Tattoo & Body Piercing

At 335 Hwy 75 N, you'll find the classiest tattoo shop Huntsville has to offer: FN Classy. We paid a surprise visit to FN Classy a couple months ago. We loved everything about these guys: their signs, their decorations, their personalities, and their professionalism. We would also like to mention that the shop was very clean. Nothing worse than a tat shop that feels dirty.

Shana ended up getting her first tattoo ever from Jody that night. He was friendly and talked and joked around with her to make her feel super comfortable. He didn't even make fun of her tattoo choice. :P

We loved all of the awesome artwork on the walls. Jody and Jamie are excellent artists. We recommend taking a look around the shop for inspiration. FN Classy is very... well... classy, has a great atmosphere, and isn't littered with junky flash art.
They also do body piercings, and they have a lot of nice jewelry to choose from. You can see some of it on their Facebook page (link below). Their piercing chick, Deena, was not there when we stopped by, but we have heard that she is awesome.

If you're in the mood for a new tat or piercing, just swing by or give them a call at (936)435-9300. You can also find them on Facebook by clicking here. Tell 'em "Hey, Huntsville" sent ya!

Bathroom Art: Pizza Place

My current favorite piece of bathroom art is in the first stall of the women's restroom located inside of Pizza Place.

"Every cloud has a silver lining" is an idiom that means that it is always possible to get something positive out of any situation, no matter how unpleasant of painful it might originally seem.

So true. So positive.

Such a nice thing to think about while using the restroom. =)

Starting on August 22nd, retired English professor, Barbara Tyson, will have an art exhibit on display in Loman Student Center Art Gallery on the SHSU campus. It will feature paintings of landscapes, florals, portraits, and animals. According to the linked article, she is a fan of horses so it is probably safe to assume that there will also be some paintings of horses!

The Legend of the Gorilla Statue

See that picture of gorilla head statue to the right of this page? That head belongs to my all-time favorite gorilla statue EVER MADE. Somewhere in the Avenues—go look for it yourself—you will find a gorilla statue surrounded by a cage next to a dumpster and in front of a very small apartment complex.
The legend, or even the truth, behind the gorilla statue may already be known to those who have been in Huntsville for a long enough to umm… know the story.

For those that don’t, well, the story goes like this:

The tenants of the small apartment complex were complaining about the trash can situation at the complex. The solution that the clever landlord came up with was to add a dumpster. This made the tenants VERY happy, but one neighbor VERY unhappy. You see, this neighbor took great care of his yard and house and wanted his neighbors to do the same. The neighbor began to complain loudly to others about how the dumpster was “unsightly,” “going to lower the property value of the neighborhood,” and so on.

Word of this neighbor’s concerns got back to the landlord. Now, he had no plan of removing the dumpster, but he did have a sense of humor and was quite the sculptor.  Much to the horror of the neighbor, instead of removing the dumpster, he added a gorilla statue instead!
When people tried to vandalize the statue, the landlord added a fence around the gorilla.

And that my friends, is how we now have a gorilla statue somewhere in the Avenues… or so the legend goes. If I ever gain enough courage, I may just knock on the landlord’s door and ask him how truthful this legend truly is—but I kind of like the story  the way is now. =)

Speaking of the landlord’s property, the gorilla by the dumpster is not the only one he has made. In his own yard, he has this statue:

Looking more closely, it appears that someone broke something off... poor gorilla:

Wynne Home Summer Art Classes begin July 19th!

The Wynne Home Summer Art Classes
Session 1 Tuesday, July 19th - 23rd
Session 2 Tuesday, July 26th 30th

1428 Eleventh Street
Huntsville, TX 77340
936-291-5424

Registration has begun for The Wynne Home’s Summer Art Classes! Classes have limited seating so if there is a class that you are interested in it is best to register as soon as possible.
I found a brochure with a description of the classes while paying my water bill. I looked for a copy of this brochure or another source for this information, but the only thing that I was able to find was THIS Save the Date flier on the Official Website.

I scanned the flier and saved it as four different jpg. pictures in order to share the information. Unfortunately, it is slightly blurry from the whole scanning process, but it is still readable. You can email wintern@huntsvilletx.gov for more information:

There are several classes available. Hopefully each one will have enough participants so that none of them are canceled. Again, sorry about the blurriness of the uploaded flier!

Spotlight: Kathlyn "Kat" Black

By now, you have probably noticed the mural near the corner of Sam Houston Avenue and 13th Street. It's called "Take a Look on the Wild Side," and it was painted by Kat Black. All of the animals shown in this 12-foot high, 24-foot wide mural are native to Walker County. She was kind enough to send us a photo of the sketch and of the final product (click on image to enlarge):

Kat has been painting for over 30 years. She recently showcased work at the first annual Town Creek Music Festival. Her work is actually all around us: Have you noticed the awesome mural behind Tinsley's or the mural on the wall of the Camp Coyote building? Kat painted those!

Keep your eye out for her art, and if you see her, be sure to thank her for the lesson on animals in Walker County!

Bathroom Art: Stardust Room

Sometimes we find art in art galleries and other times we find it while peeing in public restrooms. Jess and I have always been intrigued by bathroom graffiti as well as the artwork that people decide to hang up near the commode. Is it art or is it (pun intended) a bunch of crap? We don’t mind taking the pictures, and you can answer that question for yourself.

The following pictures were taken in the women’s restroom of the Stardust Room—a local favorite for many local artists.

Located close to the floor next to the toilet is this drawing of a tiger's face. Someone must have been in there for a while to draw this, and we applaud your effort... and also hope that it was the need to draw that took up your time and NOT horrible constipation.

On the wall is a painting that seems to represent music, masks, and stuff--I have never been the best at interpreting paintings.

I see a cat face pattern here:

Also, someone put a sticker of the word "complete" on the toilet paper dispenser. What does this mean? Does someone want people to "complete" their bathroom experience by wiping? Or is it something deeper than that? It's a mystery!

Finally, remember to do this:

Overall, I grade the art in the Stardust bathroom a B-. I enjoyed the cat faces and the "complete" mystery of the sticker on the toilet dispenser, but I also found it to be lacking in both quantity and quality. I expected more from you Stardust Room, but at least it was cleaner than the majority of bar bathrooms in town. You might want to do something about this crack, though:

Aftermath: SHSU Art Auction (4/30)

Hey, art patrons. On Saturday, we headed over to the first annual SHSU Student Art Association auction. There was plenty of art to view on the walls in the main room and tons of art laying out on tables in the back room of Crazywood Gallery. What was missing? The art patrons of Huntsville and participants in the live auction. I'm not sure why the attendance was so low, but you all missed out on free refreshments - and I know you love free stuff. More importantly, you missed out on seeing the artwork of some talented artists. Some of the work really stood out. Hopefully, we will be featuring some of these artists' talents in our blog soon.

Aside from posting in a newspaper that no one reads or putting up posters that many will overlook, there are not many ways to get the word out about these types of events in Huntsville, so please tell your artist and art lover friends about us and have them subscribe to or bookmark this blog. We will try our best to notify you of upcoming events and feature many known and underground artists in the area. If you know of someone who creates and you would like to see them featured here, please let us know.

Next time there is an event like this, I want to see all sorts of people there! There was seriously something for everyone - a wide variety of styles. See you next time!
